Sun, Sea And Sand At Playa Las Tortugas Nayarit

By Sue Carpenter

There is nothing like a beach holiday to revive body and soul. The calming sound of the waves combines with the warmth of the sun on your skin and the feeling of fine sand underneath your feet to wash away all your troubles. Unfortunately, many of the world's best beach destinations are being overrun by tourists. This can make you feel a little like you're in the big city except that the people are wearing beachwear instead of business suits. Luckily there are still some perfect spots that haven't yet been discovered by tourist masses. With beaches like Playa Las Tortugas Nayarit in Mexico offers the relaxing holiday you've been dreaming of.

Nayarit is one of Mexico's Pacific states. About 70 miles or so north of Puerto Vallarta and with Guadalajara lying to the south-east, you'll find Playa Las Tortugas. This beach is separated from Platanitos, a tiny fishing community, by a river mouth.

You couldn't ask for a better climate for a seaside holiday. Days are hot and sunny, perfect for working on your tan and for cooling off in the ocean. Especially during June through to September it can be quite humid as well, since it's rainy season, but subtropical showers in the afternoon will bring welcome relief. Nights are pleasantly balmy.

The name 'Playa Las Tortugas' means 'turtle beach' and this beach is indeed a favorite nesting spot for Olive Ridley sea turtles. A turtle conservation project here helps to protect these highly endangered creatures. Volunteers patrol the beaches, monitor nests and help release newly hatched turtles into the ocean.

The estuary around the river is teeming with wildlife. A huge number of bird species come here to feed on the fish, crabs and frogs that live in the swampy waters. This makes it a perfect spot for bird-watching.

There is a lot of other things to do to pass the days during your holiday too. Naturally you'll want to dip your toes into the cool blue water of the ocean but the surfing is good as well. You can kayak or explore the estuary in a canoe or you can rent a horse for the day and go riding. There are even yoga retreat packages for those who want to salute the sun in a different way.

Accommodation at Playa Las Tortugas is mainly rental houses of luxury villas. Without high-rise hotels like you'll find in places like Cancun or Acapulco, there are fewer inhabitants even during high season. This keeps the beach secluded and private. It is much better for the environment too, especially for the turtles that can become confused by the lights of large developments.

If what you want in a Mexican holiday is crazy parties fueled by tequila, you'll be better off going to bigger, more developed tourist destinations. These include Cancun and Los Cabos. However, if your idea of a perfect day is enjoying miles of sandy beach lined with coconut palms and hardly anybody else around, Playa Las Tortugas Nayarit is the place for you.
