Simplifying The Process Of Tying An Urban Turban

By Claudine MacDonald

Clothing is among the basic human needs that have to be satisfied by any means necessary. However, the garments that people wear are influenced by various factors. The society has expectations that individuals are expected to meet with the way they dress. Traditionally, religion governed the norms and practices of various societies around the world. Some of these religions such as Hindu and Islam required individuals to wear headdresses on various occasions. This is where the urban turban originated from. It has become a trend in modern fashion being taken up by many people worldwide.

These items of clothing are just plain sheets of cloth that are folded systematically into the designs that people wear. As expected, you have a wide variety of designs that you could use to fold the material on the head. These enhance uniqueness, which is an important aspect of any trend in the fashion industry.

The cloth could be made of any material such as cotton, nylon or other fibers. Take the cloth and put it on top of your head. Leave an allowance of about eight inches below hanging on the neck. The cloth is quite long and therefore you should have a substantial length of cloth on your face.

Using your free hand, secure cloth on your head and then with the other hand, pull back the other edge such that it covers the rest of the head surface. You should not tighten the cloth too much since it may become uncomfortable to wear.

The second wrap should send the material partly to the right to give the garment its characteristic right-leaning appearance. You should not do this without a mirror since it will be impossible to see progress without one. The next wrap should send the cloth tilting to the back of your head. The high side should be placed above your last wrap. The wraps should be repeated until about 24 inches of the cloth are left over.

It is important to remember that the garment needs to be in horizontal orientation. If not, the whole essence of wearing it is lost. Though some people may do this to stand out, it is not common. The final two feet should therefore be in horizontal orientation since they are the main determinants. The last part should be tucked in under the lower wraps.

After completing the wraps, it is possible to tilt the head gear to any side as may be required. Every wearer of these items has an idea in mind of what he/she wants to achieve wearing it. Most people want to achieve the traditional look.

Tying this cloth for the first time can be quite a challenge. It may be necessary for one to ask for help from someone with a lot of experience in tying an urban turban. With time, one develops skills in the art and can do it without looking at a mirror. A friend or member of your family could do this.
