I think I've had my fair share of racing games where karts are used. I'm not trying to say that they are terrible - far from it, in fact - but sometimes you need a change yet still want to keep the racing elements the same. Wouldn't a prominent game based around biking work well in this day and age? City bikes in a kart-style scenario sound chaotic in theory but I feel as though it could work if the developers behind the project were ready to work hard.
If you look at such games as the "Mario Kart" series, you will see that racing is only one of the many elements utilized. It's the skeleton of these games, in essence, but it's accompanied by many other factors will enhances the level of enjoyment. Items which people can use to throw off their opponents and the ability to pull off tricks while in mid-air are two of the many features one can speak of. If karts can perform these actions so well, who is to say that biking would be any different?
City bikes should work better, too, because compared to karts they are able to move around at a better pace. It's easier to control them while on the surface and the fact that there are no propellers or motors to bring them forward only helps riders rely on speed and the work they put in that much more. If you're a strong rider, chances are that you are going to succeed. Biking authorities the likes of Linus can help you further if you want to enhance your cycling experience, offering appliances for your rides.
I think it'd easy for me to see the events of these games as I type. For instance, as silly as it might seem, the image of a turtle shell careening out of nowhere and knocking a cyclist down from first place is something I can see occurring in such a game. In addition, players might have to leap from a tall height, making it ideal to score a few tricks in the process. It's important to get to the finish line, though I think it'd be wrong to discredit the importance of various actions along the way.
Video games in which bicycles are utilized are not ones which are considered new. There have been quite a number of them in the past but as time progressed, the prevalence of such titles has dwindled. I feel like in the hands of the right creators, such products can be created again and to fun degrees as well. In my mind, biking is only going to be optimal when it comes to the racing genre. Kart-style racing games have seen success and I feel like a change such as this would be refreshing.
