Excellent Black and White Photography

By James Harden

Why Black and White?

Color can be a distraction to your other photographic elements. Especially if you've captured stunning texture or lighting, often color will cause these elements to be lost on your audience. For this reason, black and white photography is an excellent option for allowing the other elements in your photo to shine.

Without the distraction of color, other elements of photography are enhanced. Some of the effects that can be produced are the timeless feel, serious mood, or other effects caused by the detail in texture. For this reason, the photographer must pay extra attention to lighting, textures, and composition when taking black and white photos.

Any Specifications Required in a Camera?

Although most cameras are equipped with black and white settings, these settings cannot be depended upon blindly. The quality of your image will really depend upon two components, your skill as a photographer and the quality of your camera. With the unpredictability of black and white settings, you may still decide to shoot in color and change to black and white during post processing.

Because quality is essential in the final rendering, you should opt for the camera of the highest quality that you have available to you. Considerations regarding using a camera phone, for example, will be incredibly challenging. But, by focusing upon the elements and your post production, you may still be able to pull off satisfactory photographs. Still, as a general rule, you'll want to select your best camera unless you're up for a huge challenge!

Points for Consideration

If you'll be shooting in color and will change them later to black and white, then you definitely need better-than-average shots. By following the rules of composition, especially the rule of thirds, you'll be able to hone your composition skills. For black and white, you need better than good photos, but instead those considered superior. Without color, you'll find your audience to be painfully critical and will want to prepare for this.

Then, for lighting, select only the most stunning photos to use for black and white. Although natural lighting is more difficult to capture at this level, it will nonetheless give you more favorable results. Artificial lighting, while still able to attain this standard, will require several runs of improvement in order to reach that level. But, as you continue to improve your skills with lighting, you'll find that honing these fine skills make you a better photographer all around.

Thus, I think it's clear that black and white photography, while incredibly fun can be monstrously challenging. Yet, it is an invaluable skill to have that will also improve your color photography skills. So, while difficult, black and white photography (and the process it involves) will go a long way to make you into an even better photographer.
