Learn Acoustic Guitar Today

By George Balibrera

You can learn acoustic guitar quickly and easily. It is one of the easiest instruments in the world to learn and play. First things first, you need an instrument. If someone you know owns one, borrow it.

Now we need to tune it. Nothing sounds worse than an out of tune instrument. Don't panic. This will take you a couple of minutes to learn, and you'll never forget it.

You need to tune to the rest of the music in the world. If you have another instrument to tune to, use it. Or you can find a web site that has the notes for tuning. There are many of them.

You'll start tuning with the top string - the thickest one. This is E or 6th string (you count up from the bottom string one through six). Go to the web page and play the E note for the 6th string. Play the same string on your instrument. Turn the first tuning peg (where that strings is to tied to the headstock) and turn it until the two sounds are exactly the same. If there is a vibrating or wavering sound, adjust until the sounds are the same and wavering is gone.

Put your finger on the same string at the fifth fret. There is a dot or square to locate the 5th fret (and one at the 3rd, as well, so go to the second dot). Play the same string again (finger pressing the 5th fret) and play the string underneath that one (this is the 5th string or A). Find the tuning peg for this string and turn it to get this string in tune with the top string.

Do each string in turn using the same procedure to tune the string below it. For the 2nd string (counted up from the bottom), use the 4th fret of the string above it. This is just the way the notes fall on the fretboard. This may sound difficult, but after you've done it a couple of times, it will become part of your routine, and you'll always remember how to do it.

Now you're in tune. You're going to learn your first 3 chords - C, G, and D. You can use those to play a whole lot of songs. Look at the diagrams online of where to place your fingers for each chord.

That's how easy it is to learn acoustic guitar. Practice strumming those 3 chords. You're going to do this until your fingertips are aching with pain. Practice changing between chords. Do it in front of the TV or waiting for your clothes to dry. Just keeping doing it. After a few days, if you don't give up, you are a guitar player. Next, go online and find songs to play with those 3 chords and add more chords. You can look for guitar tabs or tablature for the songs you like. But first, get in tune and practice until your fingers almost bleed. Do that right now, and you will never forget how to play those first 3 chords.
