All About Removable Ink Tattoos

By Kenneth Orr

Historically, tattoos have been painful to get and even more painful to remove. Laser treatments to remove tattoos have made the process safer than some of the old methods, but still take several sessions for complete removal.

There is now a new development in tattoo ink which could help to solve such a problem. It is called removable ink and while it may be permanent while it is in the skin, all it takes in one laser treatment to get it completely removed.

The new ink was developed by a company called Freedom-2, LLC and it is based on the research conducted by Harvard Medical School and Duke University scientists. Basically, it is a packaged tiny polymer microspheres that stay in tact while the ink is in the skin. However, when they are hit with lasers, they explode.

This leaves the biodegradable ink to dissolve and be absorbed by the body, disappearing and leaving no evidence of the tattoo. It may also be safer than conventional inks that could contain toxic substances and metals such as iron and cobalt, which occasionally causes allergic reactions.

There are reports that this new, removable ink is much safer because it is soluble, even though that it not something that a lot of people like to hear when they think of tattoo ink. However, since it is encapsulated, it will remain permanent until the laser bursts the capsule.

The ink is also expected to be more stable over time because of the encapsulation, meaning that it won't migrate and fade like conventional inks might. The new ink was released in 2007 and currently, only black ink is available.

Currently, Freedom-2 is working on the development of removable inks in a wide range of colors and all of the inks are expected to be a little more expensive than the conventional tattoo inks.

Why would you use removable ink instead of conventional ink? One obvious reason is that you may want to remove a tattoo at some point. About one in four American adults have one or more tattoos, and about 17% of them are reported to be considering having a tattoo removed.

With the removable ink, it will be a lot less expensive and less painful to remove the tattoo. Beyond the convenience of the removal, there are safety claims that are important if they can be substantiated.

When consulting with your tattoo artist on your next tattoo, it might be useful to inquire about removable ink. Remember that at this time, only black ink is available, but more colors should be available soon. Your tattoo price may be a bit higher, but you'll have the option of removing your tattoo much more easily than in the past.
