You've always dreamed about the bright lights, the big stage, the adoring fans. Or maybe you just love music and you want to share your music with the world.
Do any of your friends share the same dream or talent for music as you do?
Have you got all the pieces of your band you need? Keyboard player? Smooth Jazz saxophonist? If your friends don't have all the skills you need, you could try finding other band members on line.
Using people you know should stand you in better stead over time, because you'll have more chances to build on the original formula, stay together and of course get better over time. The next step is to come up with a name.
The musical genre you've chosen will have a great influence over the name, you can't choose a name like "Rabbit Tails" for a rock group (or maybe you could?).
As well as the type of music you play, your prospective audience might have an influence on the name of your band. You don't want to alienate potential new fans or limit your chances of exposure by having a name that's offensive or not broadcast-able.
Obviously you aren't going to be successful without practice. So the next step will be find a place where you can practice. We've all heard successfully band stories, like that they've started playing music in their garages or basements. Sure why not, if you have space there, and understanding neighbours then do it. Once you've started playing, of course you need to practice, practice and practice again. Then practice some more. This takes time and effort but in the end with sacrifice and perseverance you will see the results.
You can practice playing other people's songs whilst you're learning but no one ever got famous playing other people's music (actually that's not true) and wouldn't you rather be writing and playing your own stuff anyway? After all, that's why you got into this in the first place, right?
Once you are ready try to play at some venues - doesn't matter how small, just get the experience of playing live and gigging as well as getting your music heard. You never know who's going to be in the audience listening.
Spread the word around using flyers, own websites, Facebook account, twitter account, articles around the internet in Music Categories. Do all that you have to do to promote yourself.
You can upload your songs to websites like soundcloud and youtube then promote it so that people can listen to it and hopefully share it so more and more people get to know your sound.
At the end of the day, don't expect to become an overnight sensation, if you do, that's great but in the mean time, don't stop believing. Hold on to that feeling.
