With Karan Johar's upcoming directorial venture "Student of the Year" only a few weeks away, the spotlight on the best-selling director has clicked on yet again. Hailed for his "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" directorial debut that surfaced in 1998, Karan Johar has shifted away from his usual stratagem of using well-known faces, settling for a newer tide of actors this time around. Leaning back to his first film which portrayed three teenagers dealing with the trials of love, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, his next is expected to hold all the glamour and extravagance synonymous with his films.
After tasting success, he later went on to direct Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006 and My Name is Khan (2010), a movie scripted around the prejudice faced by Indians in the United States after the World Trade Center attacks. Later this year, the fifth movie directed by Karan Johar will release, titled "Student of the Year", featuring Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. The film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor and features special appearances by Karan Johar's close-friend and lucky mascot Shah Rukh Khan along with Kajol.
Karan Johar isn't just limited to playing the role of a director calling the shots. For Student of the Year, the director has also choreographed the song Ratta Maar, sung by Vishal Dadlani and Shefali Alvares. With no choreographer present on the day the song was to be shot, Karan Johar decided to direct the song and craft the dance moves too. Modest as ever however, Karan Johar has taken no credit for his work on the song, leaving it all to Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Bosco and Remo Fernandes.
And this certainly isn't the first time Karan Johar has stepped away from his usual directorial role. Starting off as an assistant director, Johar has helped director Adtya Chopra in writing screenplay. He has selected costumes for Shah Rukh Khan for films like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Duplicate (1998) and Mohabbatein (2000) amongst others. The director has also judged a talent show on Indian television, joining one of the contestants on stage to play the drums. Multi-talented with lots of potential, Karan Johar is expected to grab the spotlight with the upcoming Student of the Year.
For the film, Karan Johar roped in Siddharth Malhotra, his trainee-assistant director for My Name is Khan. A promising fresh new face to the big screen, he plays the role of Abhimanyu, a student. Siddharth Malhotra has on previous account worked as a child artist in Prithviraj Chauhan and has made an appearance as a VJ and assistant director for NDTV Good Times.
