Divine Expression Provides A Reason For Living

By Lorie Salinas

Whether there is any meaning to life is a question that concerns many people at some stage in their lives. If there is no meaning, then there can seem to be no reason to persist with a troublesome life. From this point of view, suicide can appear to be the most realistic option. The concept that all is divine expression implies that there is reason behind these challenges and can change the experience of the events of life.

There are many who doubt the reality of this view, and there is currently little scientific proof for it, because the whole phenomenon is outside the current boundaries of science, although cutting-edge discoveries are beginning to touch lightly on the fringes. But whether this view can be proved or not is irrelevant: the real issue is if it helps people to express their potential, come to terms with their lives, and make meaningful positive contributions to society.

Further, it may just be that an important aspect of reality is being perceived, an aspect beyond the reach of the everyday senses but no less real. People cannot hear the sounds that bats or dogs can but this does not mean such sounds are not real. Scientific instrument reveal much which we are not consciously aware of, but this cannot be taken to imply that we are not affected by such phenomena.

Many studies have revealed how sensitive many organisms can be to unseen influences, so they cannot just be lightly dismissed. Perhaps the search for some sort of meaning which is common to so many is merely a response to some such phenomenon. Perhaps the many spiritual movements do have some root in reality, together with much that is not helpful, and they may help people get into alignment with another reality. Such organizations have certainly helped many to come to terms with life, although they may have created some problems as well.

Human beings are known to have many instinctive behaviors which can be very unhelpful in modern times, although originally evolved as survival mechanisms. If allowed free play, the results can be something like the Holocaust, which arose from a suspicion of strangers or people who were different in some way. While they served well to ensure survival in a primitive past, modern man needs to be mindful of these instincts and not permit them free reign.

It is self-evident that these instincts should only be obeyed when there is good reason to do so. In reality, danger more often comes from those known than unknown, probably for the very reason that such people are trusted because they are familiar. It is better to be aware of possible danger but not to automatically reject strangers or people with different attributes such as skin color or language or even place of residence.

In fact, it can also be seen that the way situations and occurrences are perceived is a matter of individual choice. Good and bad are not attributes of situations or objects, but a perception of the individual involve. It depends on the impact it has. Losing a job can appear disastrous, but later on be seen as the best thing to have happened at that time, because of changes that flowed from this incident

This perception of being part of a divine expression encourages people to take a look a their actions from a wider perspective, and this must be a good thing. Human beings need not be mere instinctive automatons: they can choose. Ultimately, good choices on the part of many can create greater world harmony and balance.
