There are hundreds of clubs and concert production companies that book local talent. Most of these companies are fair and honest establishments. However as in any field there are a few people that ruin it for everyone. So how can you be sure if the company or club that books your band is honest and fair?
The Better Business Bureau should be the first place you go to check someone out. You can check a businesses score and see how many complaints that they have had recently. The BBB is very tough on businesses so a good score means a lot.
The BBB rates businesses on the number of complaints they get in a year and whether that business is capable of resolving such complaints. Think about the number of customers concert production companies deal with on a daily basis. Its is astronomical. For a small business they deal with a lot of customers from every walk of life. So its really hard for them to get a good rating.
There is a production company based out of Ohio called Gorilla Music that has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Again this is an amazing feat considering the number of customers they work with on a yearly basis. They estimate that they service over one hundred thousand customers each year and have only had three BBB Complaints in the last seven years. Search the net for Gorilla Music Review to see reviews and testimonials.
Afton Entertainment is another company that has a decent reputation. There BBB score isn't quite as good as Gorilla Music's score, but they do run a lot of concerts. Anytime you see a company like Afton that has shows all over the place that is a good sign. It hard to build a network of show around the country and the fact that they have been able to do so speak volumes for them.
So first look at their BBB rating, and then see what other reputable clubs are working with them. If you're looking for referrals make sure you're asking businesses for referrals. Asking some strange band from down the street about a club can be helpful. However, take anything they say with a grain of salt as it's not going to mean as much as another reputable business source.
