Decorating With Unique Quilt Hangers

By Eliza Mendoza

Quilt hangers are a wonderful method of storing your handmade, quilted coverlets as well as displaying them as works of art and detailed craftsmanship. Your friends and family will be able to enjoy them and they will not wear out due to usage or exposure.

The majority of quilt hangers are made from solid wood. Many will have unique and creative designs cut or carved into them that will complement your home decor. Choose the size that best fits your coverlet - they are available in twin, full, queen and king sizes. You can also purchase smaller ones for baby blankets or smaller items. Many companies will be happy to custom-make one that best fits your creation.

The compression-style model is the most common. The quilt is secured by knobs between two pieces of hardwood. This eliminates the need for holes or other damage to the piece. A rod-style is also available where the coverlet is folded over a long, narrow piece of wood. A pocket can also be sewn into the upper edge of the coverlet so the entirety can be viewed when hung.

You may wish to add extra touches to the hanger. Some come complete with an upper, narrow shelf - perfect to display other handicrafts, small heirlooms or family photos. Rod-style models may have a rod that swings out, making it very easy to add and remove creations.

Be sure to place your handiwork where the sun will not fade or weaken the fabrics. Suggestions to hang the coverlet would include over a couch, on a large, bare wall, above a fireplace, over a bed, or suspended from a high ceiling. You can even choose your furniture and accessory colors to match the display or vice versa.

Hanging your item in a manner such as this will also keep your belongings safe from pets and small children. It is important to place it high enough that they don't pull it down or stain it. Kitchen areas and other sections of the home where food and other substances can be spattered on it are not advisable.

They can also be used for other decorating needs. Other items which can be displayed include Indian rugs, Asian coverlets, banners, large pieces of fabric artwork, Persian rugs, weaving, and tapestries. Your hanger can even be painted or stained to match the item being displayed.

Give these wooden display pieces to friends and family to display their own personal artwork. This is a creative way for them to share their crafts and original designs with others - check to make sure you order the correct size for their specific work.

Using quilt hangers will allow individuals to display their own unique handicrafts or those of others. Hanging heirloom pieces is also an excellent method of commemorating a loved one who had excellent needlework skills. Being able to share these creative pieces with others will give individuals a sense of accomplishment and pride.
