In the years that I've existed, there is one encounter that has left a lasting lesson in my life. This was the time when I celebrated Christmas with the kids that got cancer.
Many men and women must come to an agreement with me that Christmas is better enjoyed by kids. I recall a verse in the Scriptures which says, "Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them. For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children." I guess that Jesus may truly want people to be happy, especially the children, during His birthday.
However, not all the kids are truly happy on Christmas day. There happen to be those that are embroiled in some war. There are likewise those who do not have their own friends and family with them and then there are those who are ill. Among the various kinds of ailments around the world, cancer is definitely among the most difficult diseases for a child to endure. It hinders children to play, to go to school, to have a normal life and often it hinders kids to live a life.
At the time I had the chance to enjoy Christmas together with the kids who have cancer, it changed my perspective about life in general. Many people may think that a very sick or dying kid will not like Christmas. On the contrary, this wasn't the image I found amongst these children. They simply appreciate Christmas just like they were not sick. It seems as if, Christmas time by itself was a gift to savor much more than expensive toys, personalised Christmas cards or even delicious food. This made me consider that maybe this was the reason why Jesus liked children. This was simply because children could see over and above suffering. This was mainly because kids can survive no matter how complicated things are. It was mainly because kids do not stop celebrating Jesus' birthday no matter how hard life becomes.
People get upset at so many things. We come to feel low when our expenses are more than our earnings or perhaps when our boss does not like the business Christmas cards model that we created or if the traffic is quite heavy. All of these are simply too little things compared to what a kid with cancer needs to endure every day.
Spending Christmas with all these children has not only shown me the very best Christmas gift that was gifted to us but also how we ought to live our lives. Our everyday lives may be filled with hardships yet we have to remain strong and live our lives the way it should be lived.
