How The Many Christmas Traditions And Customs Allow Us To Create Happy Memories

By Alaric Sowerby

Christmas is a celebration abundant in history and tradition. People around the world may observe this holiday in many ways yet one thing is clear, everybody is having the best times of their life during Christmas. Most of us spend it with their family and friends, enjoying each other's company, remembering loving memories, and making fresh ones.

They claim that things, good or bad, come in threes. Christmas has many unique customs but the three that are prominent are fruit cakes, Christmas trees and Christmas cards.

Every family has its individual secret formula in preparing fruit cakes that is well-kept and passed down from generation to generation. All over the world, fruit cakes have a lot of varieties as the diversity in the ingredients included become clear. In the UK, for one, fruit cakes are moist in texture and richer in flavor than their American counterpart. Fruit cakes are also a part of the UK Christmas custom, usually covered with royal icing and marzipan. They are then garnished with holly leaves, real or artificial berries, and other ornaments commemorating Christmas.

Now, what is Christmas if there is no tree crammed with bright ornaments and lights? It is also a special Christmas tradition wherein the fathers and their sons go out and select the tree and the entire family decorates it, with the special privilege given to the youngest member of the household to put the star on top of the tree. Traditionally, the tree is installed and decorated on Christmas Eve, December 24th and will be removed the day following twelfth night, January 6th. Coniferous trees and evergreens are the mostly used trees and the firs, spruces and pines being the three most common species.

On the other hand, presents and personalized Christmas cards are part of our lives. Hence, Christmas would not be complete without receiving and giving away a Christmas souvenir in one way or another. People use up a lot of their time planning what to give their loved ones on this special celebration. It is likewise evident to everybody that Christmas is the busiest shopping season of the year where people are more ready to splurge in the spirit of giving and of Christmas. Business Christmas cards are handed out by large companies to let their clients realize how much the establishment appreciate their loyalty and look forward to a better relationship in the coming year.

These are just three of the Christmas customs that, whether we like it or not, we all anticipate every year. After the Yuletide season, after clearing out the clutter in the kitchen, after removing the tree, we can't wait for the next Christmas to come around again.
