There's been a few changes in the world of handheld GPS since last time I wrote so I thought I'd provide a quick update on things. Let me introduce myself again, my name's Richard and my website, SatelliteMapReview is a resource website for handheld GPS where you can find all the best reviews and deals on hiking, geocaching and outdoor GPS. So there's a couple of things I'd like to talk about today, some new arrivals on the market that are shaking up the world of handheld GPS. The first is the new eTrex range of compact handhelds which has been out for a while now and is proving a massive hit. The second is somewhat newer, the Magellan eXplorist range, now available in Europe .
So first up let's take a look at the new eTrex range from Garmin. The previous eTrex range was a super seller as they banked on the fact they were so compact and easy to use and gave superb coverage all over the world. However the time was right to introduce a more advanced series of mappers and the new eTrex range combines the compact body so familiar from the old series and then adds a whole load of new features. The eTrex 10 is the most basic model with monochrome screen and basic plan style mapping but it also has excellent capabilities for geocaching and plenty of memory to store cache information.
The next up in the range are the eTrex 20 and 30 handhelds which feature full colour screens, customizable GPS features and toys like altimeter and barometer, all the while maintaining a compact size and fun, high value feel. The series is compatible with some excellent OS-style mapping add-ons available from Garmin's own store which really allow you to get into your landscape and location just like a paper map. Tools like distance to destination, electronic compass, estimated time of arrival and more make them indispensable navigational tools.
So yes, the new eTrex range is doing well and people are responding well to the excellent features, compact size and brilliant prices. However, a new rival to Garmin is emerging with the advent of Magellan's arrival in Europe . For a while now us handheld GPS fans have heard and read a lot about Magellan GPS and their great reputation in the US, so it's a great thing that finally the company have decided to launch their handhelds in Europe. The Magellan eXplorist range consists of five GPS handhelds designed to cover the whole of the market - they have a couple of simpler compact models priced well and then progressively more advanced units capable of all the tricks of modern GPS.
Magellan's eXplorist range is newly available in the UK and in Europe and consists of five handheld GPS which cover the whole spectrum of budget and features. The first in the series is the only handheld GPS expressly designed for geocaching, the eXplorist GC. It's compact with a 2.2 inch screen and built specifically to store and relay data on cache locations. The next one up in the series is the 310 which uses the same size body and screen but adds some more dedicated GPS features and mapping. For its size it is pretty powerful and will prove a rival to the eTrex 20, I predict. From there you've got the 510, 610 and 710 models, all more advanced handheld GPS machines with camera, recording facilities and all the toys like advanced OS-style mapping barometric altimeter and customizable menu options. So there's a little intro to some of the biggest trends right now in handheld GPS. Do come over to visit my site at SatelliteMapReview and get all the reviews and best prices, I'll see you there!
