Discovery Channel Gold Rush Alaska: Who Will Strike it Rich?

By Charles Edgar

The members of the Discovery Channel show Gold Rush Alaska have all had their share of struggles while taking a stab at mining gold in the wilderness of Alaska. In their attempts to strike it rich, many unforeseen circumstances had arose and some were faced with catastrophic consequences. The Schnabel and Hoffman crews had dealt with a set of their own ordeals while being greenhorns at the game of mining for gold in Alaska, but Dakota Fred, also known as "Big Boot", arguably suffered the worst of it in the last few episodes of the show.

Dakota Fred was hit hard by karma, and namely, he deserved it. In the beginning episodes of the second season of Gold Rush Alaska, Dakota "Big Boot" Fred swooped in and purchased the Porcupine Creek claim while he had known the Hoffmans were doing all of the digging and dirty work without telling them a thing. Fred let them dig deep down in Jack's glory hole, and he then pulled up and broke the news to the hardworking Hoffman crew that he now owned the Porcupine Creek claim. He even forced them off of the claim so quick that the Hoffmans couldn't even take or process their hard-earned pay dirt. Dakota Fred processed the Hoffman's gold and took it for himself.

The only sensible thing that "Big Boot" has done on the show is to purchase all of the old and worn equipment from Todd and Jack Hoffman. Fred deserved to get this junky equipment, and the Hoffman crew deserved to get it off of their hands and gain some capital to buy newer and better equipment. Jack was smart enough not to part with his 400 excavator, and Fred did not get his dirty hands on it. MSHA was also kind enough to shut down Dakota Fred for a good while, but poor Parker Schnabel was misfortunate enough to be in the vicinity with his grandfather's gold mine and suffered the same ordeal.

Most likely because of his selfish actions, Fred was hit hard by karma. His house in North Dakota was subjected to cataclysmic destruction due to flooding just like over four thousand other homes in the area. Against the will of his wife, "Big Boot" flew home from Alaska back to North Dakota to check on the damage. What he found was an incredible amount of destruction due to water damage. Most fans of Gold Rush Alaska blogged and commented about how Fred really got what he deserved since he stole the claim from the Hoffman crew.

Out of all of the members of the Gold Rush Alaska TV show, Dakota Fred was subjected to the worst case scenario of embarking on such an ambitious endeavor as gold mining in Alaska. But as most viewers agree, he deserved it. His house had been destroyed by floods, he had been shut down by the Mining Safety and Health Administration, his son abandoned him at the mine, and he had been operating on a negative cash flow and short-handed. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top next season, but it does not come as a surprise that most of the fans of the show are all in favor of the Hoffman crew striking it rich before anybody.
