4 Practical Tips: Executives

Reflect on all of the times you go to the movie theaters, the times you have gone in your lifetime are probably countless. Though you may know that there are many people involved, many only credit the actors. Take the time to check out the names in the opening credits the next time you go to the movie theatres. Some of the most important people on those credits are the executive producers and producers. These people are a big deal when it comes to the making of a movie; they are investors that create the film and have the money to put it together easier. Sometimes there are a lot of people who are producers and executive producers in the movies.

The executive producer is usually the one that the rights to the property go to during the planning stage of the film; the rights usually include the play or novel that the movie is based on. The executive producer also usually is the only one who has the job of finding and acquiring investors. Most of the time an executive producer will hire a line producer to deal with the film's day to day activities.

The only people involved in the pre-production happenings of the film is the casting director and the executive producer. The next person to be added to the film crew is the costume designer. The costume designer chooses fabrics, colors, and sizes for all the costumes; once the decisions are made, the costume designer makes the clothes.

It is time for filming to begin once the director is found; from now on the director is in charge. One of the director's main responsibilities is to decide how the film is going to look; once that is figured out the director can show the actors how to perform to fit that certain look. The audience's impression of the film is in the director's hands.

A director will always has a specific style that varies between directors. Some directors rely on imaginative improvisation. There are some directors, on the other hand, that have every shot planned out perfectly. For a few gifted directors, the job of writer, producer, and director falls all on the same shoulders. Some directors choose to work in pairs; one will usually work as a cinematographer while the other does a lot of producing. Many films out there today are directed by the main actor as well. The role of the director is endless; there are sometimes directors who create their own musical scores, while other directors choose to make only cameo appearances in the film.

The roles of the director, the costume designer, the executive producer, and the other producers are extremely important to the making of any high budget film. When it comes to making or breaking a film, the responsibility of the films integrity falls on these executives.
