If you bought a painting on stretched canvas, here are a couple common occurrences that have quick and simple remedies:
Dent or Canvas Sag
Let's say you unexpectedly pushed against the backside of the stretched canvas painting which made a dent, or it could be the canvas has just sagged as time passes due to heat and humidity levels...
Solution:
Squirt the backside of the canvas with warm (not hot) water and when the water disappears the canvas shrinks back into shape. You Should Never over-saturate. It is better to continue this procedure a couple of times in intervals of 1 hour, instead of over saturate it the first time. This is effective 99% of the time
Distorted Stretcher Bars
Let's assume if your painting was travelling from it's original location to you and was totally exposed by the shipping carrier to extreme heat, cold, and/or humidity OR after some time in your own home, as a result of changes in climate and/or humidity levels, the wooden stretcher bars may have warped. At times the warping might be significant, most of the time they are minor and unnoticeable.
Remedy for slight warps:
What you will need: Bowl, water, rag/towel, Kraft or Butcher paper, four books and four weights (either exercise weights or just four large stones)
Pick an area within your house that does not get a lots of traffic and will be out of your way for a day or two. If possible the floor or maybe a table.
Create a clean dry surface in which you will later on place your painting face down. This is very important: Don't use a plastic bag because it can stick to a painting, Don't use newspapers since the print might pass on onto the painting. Use clean non-stick material just like butcher or Kraft paper.
Fill up a container with luke-warm water. Flip the painting over, put it facedown on the surface you have just made, and wet the wooden stretcher bars using a soaked rag/towel, ensuring to keep wetting the bars until you see they're sufficiently wet. Place 1 book on each of the 4 edges of the canvas and after that place your weight on the top of the books. Wait one day. For good measure, I would recommend taking the books and rocks off after 24 hours, rewetting the bars, and putting the books and rocks back for yet another 1 day.
IF this does not work, regrettably this means the warp is a significant one and the painting must be taken to a local stretching and frame store to be re-stretched.
