Creative Ways To Make Portable Guitar Stands

By Cornelia White

Keeping your guitars in their respective cases will save them from dust and dirt, but it will also keep them from view. Many musicians are so proud of their guitars that they really like to show them off, and like to keep them within easy reach. They therefore need stands for their musical instruments. Portable guitar stands are the best variety, as they can be moved easily from one location to another.

Stands for guitars are sold in music shops, but like all musical equipment, they can be pricy. You can save a good deal of money by making your own, and it can be just as good as those that are bought. You can also decide from which material to make your stand. PVC or metal pipes are quite easy to put together, but wood is also the ideal material to use. You can make the decision based upon how familiar you are with the various materials, and the tools you own.

People often use PVC pipes because they are not required to be welded together, or nailed to each other. They will also not need to be glued. They can just be fitted to one another. A PVC stand will also hold several guitars if necessary. For most average-sized stands, approximately twenty feet of PVC is required, of about a three-quarter-inch in thickness.

Wood is also the ideal material from which to make a stand. There are also many designs from which to choose. If you don't need your stand to be portable, you can simply hang it on a wall. This sort of stand will also hang several guitars, and is very simple to make. All you will need is a suitable length of wood, bolts, hooks and washers, and equipment to install it.

Before you put on the hooks, make sure that your guitars can be placed with sufficient distance between them. Make a mark where the hooks will be. You will most likely find that about two feet is good enough.

Once you have the location of the hooks drawn, you should measure to ensure that they are in a straight line. A level comes in handy when you need to put the wooden plank onto the wall, as you want it to be nice and straight. Use bolts and washers to secure the wood in the ideal place.

For a more movable stand, you might consider something similar to a tripod. If built in such a way, the stand can easily be folded and placed in a vehicle. Always start by drawing the parts that need to be cut from the wood, and then use the appropriate tools to cut and assemble them. You can also come up with your own unique design.

The most fun part of building a portable guitar stand is decorating it. Use your imagination and choose some attractive colors. Always sand the wood down well, and leave the first coat of paint to dry for about twenty-four hours. You can also stain the wood for a beautiful appearance. However you decide to build your stand, you will find that it is quite an easy achievement, and tat it will be most useful.
