Outer Space Growth Of Organic Crops Is Probable

By Robert Sutter

When you think about the best organic crops out there, what are some of the features that seem to spring to mind the most? Maybe you think about mostly green, with farms and gardens alike being some of the most common traits. That being said, did you know that there is a chance for other environments to be taken into account? Judging from a recent story that has come to my attention, it seems as though outer space could prove to be another viable location to speak of.

The Verge posted a story about the matter and it seems like NASA will attempt to make history thanks to the idea of growing food in space. It's the kind of report that has been able to earn the support of those involved in organic crops and rightfully so. I think that, come December when this launches, it could prove to be the best effort needed in order to save money. This particular story definitely deserves the attention of authorities along the lines of Colle Farmers Market.

The project in question is referred to as the Vegetable Production System and the way that it will be done could prove to be quite interesting. With six romaine lettuce plants set in place, each of them will grow under pink LED lights as opposed to the natural sunlight that most of us could associate with farming. Even though there is no gravity to speak of, it's been said that the plants will only need a month of growth each. The fact that this can be done regardless of such limitations is very telling, to me.

I did not realize just how expensive it was to ship items to those in space until I read the article. It seems like it could cost as much as $10,000 to do such a thing, which goes to show just how needed this theory is. Why should there be so much of an expense put forth for the matter? It's clear that these individuals who are within their travels are going to have to possess all of the necessary provisions but there has to be much better methods put into place, right?

In my opinion, the idea of organic crops is usually associated with growth that is seen on the surface. However, the idea of these items bring brought into space is something that I would not have thought about until this story came to the forefront. It seems like plans are being made to make sure that this is a reality and I have to believe that the results will prove themselves in the long term. If there is another environment for plants to thrive within, it can only help such growth that much more.
