I have lost some weight so it is a little big all over, however what really bothers me is the top part - I am a small B, and the way the neckline is shaped is more for concealing a larger chest, and it makes mine look nonexistent! I even tried it on w/ a bustier-still no luck! Basically, I figured out that if somehow I could get the straps altered to more of a sweetheart halter neckline (by altering the "v" part), it would be 100% more flattering for my figure. My question is - how hard is this to do, especially considering that the dress is mostly lace &beading? The cost isn't a factor, since anything will be cheaper than buying a new dress, however can it even be done?
Answer: It has a lot of fabric in multiple layers and will require many hours of seamstress work. I doubt you would find a seamstress who would charge less than $300 to $400 just for labor to sew something that complex plus the materials will probably cost you $400 or more for fabric, notions and fittings, especially that lace overlay. So you would end up spending from $700 to $900 for the dress anyway and not be sure how well it would turn out. You would be better off just buying the dress already made. It is probably sewn in Central America or Asia where the labor rates are low, that is why it is so inexpensive. Only simple gowns are less costly to have made to order here in the USA.
Answer: I had a dress taken in 4 sizes before. It wore and looked fine. First look for your own alterations lady. Then tell your mom that you appreciate the offer of her alterations lady but you found one and would like to use that person. Hopefully she will understand!! Congrats on getting married and I hope things work out for you.
They can only take the dress in 2 sizes without ruining the look of the dress. Yes, they should be able to make the dress a halter for you, a good tailor will be able to remove any beading in the way and replace it when done. My friend had her dress altered and the guy did exactly that. She had to have her halter taken up to fit her chest, too.
There is a lot of advice I could give you but the most important really, is to make sure your friend is a skilled seamstress. You don't want to spend as much on scrap fabric as you would for a dress itself (you can find cheaper versions of just about any dress online.) makes sure you know you are both on the same page and that she can back up the ideas with talent.
