Hayward Chlorinator Types And Features

By Maximilian Birkensson

The Hayward chlorinator comes in two basic types, classified as either in-line or offline. It can easily be integrated into the pumping and filtration system that circulates water in pools and spas. Chlorinators, also known as chemical feeders, offer a safe, efficient and automated method for maintaining chlorine and/or bromine sanitizer levels.

It's no longer required to manually test the water for pH levels and chlorine, and then use chlorine tabs in floating pool skimmers. All that's needed is to install a brominator or chlorinator. It is a simple chemical feed system which is inserted between the pumping system's filter and the pool's water inlet.

The water flowing out of the pool outlet is sent through the feeder using one of many different designs. Each feeder model is meant to match a different type of pool design and differing pumping systems. Automatic feeders, for instance, can test the water for chlorine and pH levels and then let out the requisite amount of chlorine.

The offline type can be setup on a bypass tube in parallel with the main piping system. Two holes made in the tubing allow the feeder inlet and outlet to be placed between the filter and pool inlet. The water now flows directly into the pool and also through the feeder.

A few things need to be kept in mind by spa managers and pool owners when dealing with chemical feeders. For starters, the granular form of chlorine doesn't work well, so the tablets (tabs) or sticks have to be used. Secondly, feeders come in many types and have to be matched with pools of different sizes and design. Choosing the wrong feeder may work in the short term but it creates problems. A large pool may need more than one feeder and elevated pools need a completely different model.

Never use petroleum based lubricants for the cover, and exercise extreme caution when adding other chemicals into the feeder. Never install it before the heater. It always has to come after the filter and heater, just before the pool inlet. Floating chlorinators can be an easy solution, but do not use them in pools meant for children.

Then there is the question of automation. There are different models, some of which can automatically test chlorine levels and insert more to maintain a constant level. Other models need manual adjustment, with a dial control valve to increase or decrease the feed rate. As long as basic instructions are followed, a Hayward chlorinator installation is simple enough to be done even by do-it-yourselfers.
