On Science Fiction Books For Kids

By Ava Hudson

Science fiction is among the sub-genres in literature that have unique characteristics to define them. Most works that revolve around the subject, especially science fiction books for kids, are focused on scientific theories and what possible impacts they can have on humanity. There are some that explore on issues as the future of the planet, humankind, and of alien species. Along this context, it is safe to say that stories have underlying messages or commentaries about the conditions of people, planet earth and other possible life forms.

What many of these works aim is for the minds of people to be introduced to several possibilities and for them to establish awareness for alternative realities that may exist in this realm. Some reach out to explore the possibility of other life forms or other worlds existing in other planets. Usually, plots will range from time traveling, outbreaks of fatal viruses, to other dimensional or alternative universes.

Some works are centered on more classic plots which involve possession of main characters by aliens, whether mentally or physically. Other common elements include space explorations including colonization. Most will involve the establishment of alien civilization, the fight of humans and saving of communities. Some works might include time warping in which characters loop along with time.

There are a number of categories into which the characters will be divided usually. The most common are humans, monsters, aliens and at times, hybrids or mutations. More advanced plots often feature computer and artificial intelligence. Characters will include cyborgs or robots made to resemble humans.

Authors and storywriters might take the genre as a type of platform which they can use to convey their social critiques. Many of the works may be seen revolving around discussions on human nature, the values practiced by people, their faith and even their reliance to technology. However, there are still some critics that take science fiction as plain social commentary, a kind of genre on its own.

Choosing the best sci fi books can be rather challenging especially to parents looking at giving these to their kids. One important factor that must be considered though is the maturity level of the recipients. Parents may first want to sift or scan through the books they are looking at buying and decide if the contents will fit the knowledge scope of their children.

Another important factor that should be considered is the sensitivity level of the children. There are some children who tend to be more disturbed over minor negative aspects as compared to others. Those who may be scared easily or those with tendencies to develop monster traumas may not do too good with alien attack writings.

Violence content is another aspect to be considered when it comes to choosing materials. Many sci fi books revolve around events involving monsters, aliens and battles where killing is evident. Parents must note how much from these they consider appropriate for their kids. It might help to seek opinions from people who previously have read the writings being considered.

Librarians can be great information sources. Although it is possible that they have not scanned or read through the works being considered, they can surely tell which are currently increasing in popularity among age groups. They may also know about the science fiction books for kids that not many are familiar with.
