How to Tell a Funny Story

By Squawker Fletcherson

Delivering a funny joke is really art more than a science. Simply ask any stand-up comedian who tells the same jokes again and again and yet continue to elicit laughs from their audience night after night. The secret is the delivery of the joke from beginning to finish that makes it truly funny. The building until the climax, and the timing of the final line that makes it a side-splitting tale.

You have to believe that really only the people with crazy comedic ability can continously deliver funny news stories, jokes and punch lines like a no other. Well, we must all come to grips with the fact that even crazy good comedians like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope have to practice their delivery to little audiences before making it to the big time in TV and in the theatre. Continuous practice is the key factor to tremendous results and leads to your audience coming back for more again and again.

Listed here you will find a few tid bits from the professionals that you may use to practice your own talents. Please keep in mind that you have to learn to be flexible and open to opinion when telling hilarious jokes and quick little funny stories since each audience and town prefers different approachs.

Get your audience's attention first instead of competing with other distractions. We suggest changing your voice to suit the characters in your story as well as using hand gestures and facial cues to do so. Your main aim is to let your audience visualize the story as it happens, which is all-too-true with funny news stories where you act as the anchor man and story subjects at the same time.

Tell your funny short stories according to the mood of your audience. For example, if your audience is relaxed, say, sitting down while enjoying coffee, then your story can be told in a leisurely way. But if your audience is on the move, say, moving through a busy lobby, tell your story in a faster way.

Change the story to suit your audience. Yes, it can be the same story but told in a different manner, with different characters, or with different endings. This is how great comedians can elicit laughter out of old jokes - by revising old stories to fit the present audience.

Of course, you have to tell funny short stories with a straight face until the punch line and then you can laugh all you want.. Always remember that the story is thing that is funny, not you per se.

I know you may still think that only those with natural comedic ability can tell funny news stories, jokes and punch lines like a professional.
