Keep the following three tips in mind for a much smoother and pleasant experience at your next baby photo session.
1. Baby Wraps
The number one rule for working with baby wraps is to make sure you bundle the baby as tightly as you can because this will simulate the warmth and security of being in the womb. When a baby experiences this feeling, he/she will be much more likely to be happy and content throughout the photo shoot and you will be able to take fantastic shots. Wrapping the baby in this manner is really the same as swaddling the baby with a blanket or sleeper; which medical experts and specialists have said is shown to calm newborns because it does indeed recreate the security of the womb. The key to a happy baby is keeping him/her secure and safe!
2. White Noise Machine
The sounds of the womb are a natural environment to babies and especially newborns. This can have a wonderful calming effect on the baby even when they're fussy. Most of the best photographers out there today will keep a white noise maker of some sort in their list of props. They rarely leave home without it. If you don't have one though and don't want to buy one yet you can try out a free app in the Apple store or use one of dozens of free websites that play white noise sounds over the web. Of course, you'll have to make sure that you have an inter-net location on the site of the photo shoot though. It is usually just easier to carry a physical sound machine with you. For babies that are a little older, you may have to use a musical toy or song that they like to hear when they fall asleep since they are probably out of the stage of being calmed by the sounds of their natural environment.
3. Bring Wipes!
Keeping the value of your precious photo prop stash is really important. It is assumed that in working with babies on a regular basis some of your props are going to face an occasional, messy accident. Keeping a pack of wipes close by on the set of your photo session so you can react quickly to accidents will help the long term life of your photo props. Most parents do keep wipes around that you could probably be able to use but you don't want to depend on this or come across as assuming, so just bring your own. You'll be so happy that you did.
These are the easiest three tips to remember and most helpful in my experience. Even some of the most experienced photographers can forget about these three tips sometimes.
