Choosing An Anime Video Review Show

By Jayne Rutledge

Japanese animation is a diverse and fascinating genre. As with the printed illustrated manga in Japan it is accepted that animation is just another medium. Therefore there is an enormous range of stories to choose from. For the new viewer this can feel overwhelming and this is where choosing the right anime video review can help.

The term anime is simply the shortened form of the word animation. The distinct Japanese style originated around World War 2. This was the time when American soldiers came to Japan with American comic books and cartoons. This would then go on to influence subsequent animations in Japan.

Ironically it is Western culture that is now more and more influenced by the Japanese style. More Western cartoons are using bold freeze frames and moments where faces contorted in odd expressions. It is arguable that the emoticon used in internet chat rooms has its roots in the bizarre facial expressions of some Japanese cartoon characters.

However this is a simplification. For example the dystopian sci fi thriller Akira is visually spectacular. Once referred to as the Citizen Kane of anime it features a lot of breathtaking visuals and stunning action. However its philosophical musings are also reminiscent of the Matrix, adding an additional layer of depth to the narrative.

There is also the fact that there are many Japanese anime TV shows. The problem is it is not always easy to know what is suitable. What can seem cute on the surface can be subversive. In some cases the original Japanese versions of shows such as Sailor Moon can have more adult material than the American redubs so it is important to get information on this before making a purchase.

The presentation can vary as well. Some will be relatively straightforward and focus purely on reviewing the title. Often these will be hosted by one person who will guide you through the plot and characters before finally delivering their verdict on whether they thought the film or TV show was good or bad.

In some cases this may be one single reviewer giving their opinion. Others may involve a round table of experts and each one gives their views. Some may be more comical and poke fun at the genre. A lot of established film review websites will also often have their own dedicated anime sections. What you choose largely depends on your experience of the genre and whether or not you want to know more information or be entertained by the show.

If you are new to anime then you should look online for feedback to help you find an online anime video review show. This will make it easier to find one that is more in tune with your views. With the right approach you will learn more about the wide range of TV shows and movies that this genre has to offer as well as saving yourself from wasting money on shows and movies that you do not want to see!
