If you are a photographer, or just an amateur looking to learn about lighting in photography, you may have noticed that a lot of photographers capture some amazing photos using natural lighting. There are a couple of periods throughout the day when natural lighting can be used to capture some really amazing photographs. Many photographers use these time periods to capture some of their best photos.
The lighting of your photographs depends heavily on the emotion of the photograph that you are trying to bring out. If you are photographing a delicate flower, then you might want to take advantage of a natural softer light, where on the other hand if you are attempting to make that same flower look like it comes from a dark and twisted world, you would definitely choose a much different light in order to make the flower appear much more harsh.
If you are going for that more softer natural looking dewy look then you will want to use one of the two time periods throughout the day to take advantage of natural light. There are two times of the day when mother nature gives us the best lighting to capture the most beautiful photographs. The first time period is in the morning and is the first half hour after the sun rises over the horizon. The next time period is the time in which the sun sets, the half hour before the sun sets, and the half hour right after the sun sets.
There are three great reasons why these particular times of day are amazing for capturing great photographs. Those reasons have to do with the color, quality and direction the natural lighting provides.
First the color of the images will be soft and saturated, this is because at these times, there is much less white light than during other times of the day. The quality of the images taken during these times is improved because the lighting produces tonal transitions and soft shadows. The direction of the lighting will put an emphasis on shapes and textures.
The next time period during the setting of the sun will capture some really amazing photographs. Typically speaking the most intense display of colors appears in nature about 20 minutes before sun set, and 20 minutes after. The difference between the lighting in sun rise and sun set is that the clouds will be illuminated because the sun is below the clouds, and the light is brightening the sky, meaning the direction of the lighting has changed. This time period can be an excellent time period to take images of the sky, or use the sky as a backdrop to your subjects.
In many photography situations lighting is often used, whether it be man made, or natural. Nature provides us with some of the best lighting to produce some of the most amazing photographs. Now that you know about natural lighting you can practice using natures light and the sky as your backdrop.
