The Hype About Macromedia Shockwave Games

By Jennifer Bowers

Almost 400 million people have installed the Macromedia Shockwave player on their computers. This popularity is perhaps to a large extent due to the superior quality and detail of the online games with the Macromedia Shockwave Player. It is the first of Macromedia's multimedia player and was introduced in the market before the Flash. Though it was specifically designed for movies, Shockwave has become the tool of choice for developing online games.

Macromedia's 3D engine installed in Shockwaves is one of the best in online games. It's claimed to have supplanted Java as the hottest engine today. Free online game developers are using this device more than the other makes. All flash files can be played in the shockwave player. It works faster than Flash and is compatible with the user's computer video hardware.

All free online games that are the product of the Shockwave engine have passed all standards with flying colors. It is believed by many experts that further advances in this technology may allow it to compete with console games in the future. Maybe not in the very near future, but it is not only possible but very probable. Another area where Shockwave excels is in its graphics capability which is considered by many as at least the equal of PSP or Nintendo DS. While these issues cause a lot of raised eyebrows, Shockwave is conceded to be a major player in the field.

Shockwaves can produce many games of different types. Racing games, RPGs, fighting, and simulators are all currently available in Shockwave. However, to play most of the free online games, the users must have to comply with the required system requirements. This requirement is Shockwave's weakness when compared with console games. Games that are designed for specific consoles are all playable. In the case of Shockwave, using a computer with sufficient power is a requirement. Shockwave however more than makes up for this deficiency in terms of cost.

While many of these games may be free, some cost as little as $9.95 per download. This is a lot cheaper than the $40 you will pay for a PSP game, or the $60 you will pay for an Xbox 360 game. With more and better games that are sure to be released in Shockwave, the shift back to computer games from console games may come sooner than later. Shockwave has made a huge impact in free online games and their development.
