The Benefits of Keeping Cool At A Lower Cost With A Portable Air Conditioner.

By Peter Smith

With thermostats climbing to record levels during the summer months along with record electric bills, what can one do to keep comfortable without busting the family budget? The answer is simple. Explore the alternative of portable air conditioning.

If you think about it, the Pareto Rule or more commonly known as the 80/ 20 rule applies to this situation. For those not familiar with the 80 / 20 rule it's simple. It states: "80% of the problem derives from 20% of the cause". Taking a little liberty with this concept, we tend to reside in 20% of our homes but we pay for chilling the other 80% as well. This is particularly true, if you own a central air conditioning and heating unit or a fixed window unit.

With a portable air conditioning unit you can easily move the unit to where you desire and need it. Thus, the unit will offer cooling comfort where and whenever you require it with a minimum of wasted cooling. Further, modern portable units can and do furnish a wide variety of output to compensate for the unevenness in temperature which does occur from room to room. For instance, one room may have excessive sun exposure or high ceilings. In the case of using a portable air conditioner, you can turn up the output to meet the demands of that room without turning up the output for the entire house which would be the case, if you had a central or fixed window unit.

In general, room sizes between 300 to 450 sq. Feet. can be cooled by portable units ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 Btu while room sizes between 350 to 550 sq. Ft. can be satisfied with units between 12,000 to 16,000 Btu's. As discussed earlier, in addition to room size, other heating factors in the room need to be taken into consideration. These concerns include but are not limited to direct sunlight entering room, excessive window exposure, skylighting, poor insulation, high ceilings, and the heat from large appliances or computers.

In addition to providing, cooling during the summer months many of these units also offer heating in the winter months, as well as, being a dehumidifier. The logic here for heating here is the same as the logic for cooling. Cool or heat the rooms in the house that need it and avoid spending money on heating or cooling those areas that don't.

Finally, for those that may have concerns about the cost of a portable air conditioner but would like to step up from using a simple fan in the room, there is an alternative. That alternative is an evaporative cooling unit. Portable evaporative cooling units cost less than a portable AC unit would cost. They are about half the cost. They tend, however, to work best only in smaller rooms.
