The Making Of A Slurry Hose

By Margarita Joseph

A slurry hose is something that is used in the mining industry to transport various types of material, and can withstand very high pressures. This is what makes them so special and valuable. They can also be referred to as 'pipes'. The pipes are used in various kinds of mining, for example, zinc, phosphate, nickel, iron and limestone, and their main purpose is to carry tailings, the waste material left over after the valuable parts have been taken, from the processing plant to where they are to be discarded.

These slurry hoses are more often than not very flexible. They are made this way in order to withstand the kind of abrasion that comes with mining. Often, abrasion is caused by the materials that are transported through these hoses and as a result, there is always a need to protect hoses used in the mining industry hence the flexibility.

Another protection in place is the weather-resistant material with which they are covered. The pipes are outside, and are therefore continuously exposed to the elements. They may need to be protected against wind, rain and even snow. The sun is also a problem, as the ultraviolet rays from the earth's source of heat causes damage to most types of materials. The pipes are therefore covered.

Tools used for dealing with waste products, such as hoses, must be made in the right way. The hoses are often long, so that they effectively carry the waste to where it is discarded, and are able to withstand heat. Mining pipes are used daily, and are put under immense pressure at times. They must therefore be strong enough.

The ends of the hoses are often connected to various types of mining tools and equipment. They can also be attached to another pipe of a similar nature. The ends of the pipes are therefore made with various flange connections, such as rotating or double flange. Standard ends are also used to make them fit more easily.

Before these hoses are released to the industry, they are in most cases tested under very high pressures. However, this pressure at the time of testing has to be controlled. This is to ensure that once they are released to the industry, they will last for a long period of time and will be able to obviously withstand the harsh working conditions. This is the reason why they are specially designed.

Hoses need to be able to sufficiently carry the weight of the material they are transporting. They are therefore fitted with a support beam that is attached to a steel frame. The support beams of the pipes are then further reinforced with attachments to the ground or the flooring over which they are placed.

Once the beam is screwed to the ground, the hose is then fitted or fixed by use of clumps. These clumps help hold the slurry hose firmly to the beam. Additionally, these beams should be able to accommodate the size and dimension the hose. This will make it immovable once the mining starts and the fluids are pumped through it.
