Making An Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Lana Bray

When one is into abstract watercolor painting, he can observe that these types of paintings will have a different effect as compared to other types of paintings. Take note that artists make use of special methods that can create a somewhat 3D effect that other pictures do not have. So for those who are new to this field of painting, here is a guide on how to create special effects on the canvas.

Just like any type of art form, one must first obtain all of the necessary materials that he will be needing to create his masterpiece. The first thing on the list would be to buy some paper that is thick and used specifically for watercolor paintings. This is the type of paper that can keep the paint intact even if it is drenched in a lot of water already.

Once he has gotten the paper, then he would need to get a card board where he can stick the paper on. When he has already placed the paper on the board, then he can already spray a little bit of water on the paper and wait for it to dry. Making it damp is extremely important so that the water will be able to make the paint more durable.

So when all of the necessary things have been done, then one may already start with the painting process. At this point, one must already be able to think about what he would want to put on the paper. Now before he starts conceptualizing, he should first start mixing the paints with the water and put the mix into a small palette which will be used later on.

During this stage, the artist must have already thought of what he would want to put into the canvas. After that, one should now put some salt crystals into the wet paint and let the mix absorb the salt into the paper in order to give the picture a more crystal effect. If there are any excess salt residues on the canvas, just brush them off later on.

The next step would be now to put a plastic covering over the paper and let the wet paint stick. Artists usually do this so that they can let the paint flow around the whole paper and cover it up. When the wet paint has already been dried up, then one may now take it out and see the end result.

When one has already taken out the plastic covering, take a small toothbrush and put some wet paint on it. From there, he should now paint another layer on the paper so that it can create a 3D effect. In order to have a layered effect, artists should never ever skip this step.

So for those who are interested in abstract watercolor painting, take note of these techniques and methods mentioned above. Now if the artist would want, then he may repeat the previous two steps in order to produce a lot more effects. He may actually repeat it as many times as he wants until he gets the desired output.
