DIY: Simple AC Check

By Hedrick Lepsch

When people think of damages being incurred on their home their usual thoughts turn to winter time cold, heavy storms, and other like events. Few people, however, think of the summer time as a season that can damage their homes, even though this is exactly the case.

1. Purchase a New Water Heater Go out to a warehouse store and pick up your new heater. There are different fuel types, mainly gas and electric. It is much easier to stick with the same fuel for your new water heater otherwise you will be looking at a renovation that goes beyond just the heater. If you would like to change the size of the water heater make sure that there will be clearance with the surrounding walls where the old one is installed. Try taking some measurements of the space before you head into the store. When brining it home make sure to rent a dolly and have a second person with you to help move it. Changing the heater is not worth injuring yourself. If you feel this may be the case it is probably better to find a professional water heater and furnace installation company.

2. Inspect Your Plumbing Check the center-to-center dimensions of your old water heater and make sure they line up with the new water heater you are thinking of purchasing. Also make sure that there is a gas union for a gas heater and that there is a water shutoff for the cold water pipe as well as a union connector for the hot water outlet pipe. If these are not there it means you will need to cut the pipe before you can remove the old heater.

3. Turn off the Valves Shutoff your home's main water valve as well as the shutoff valve on the cold water pipe to your water heater. If you have a gas heater turn off the gas at your supply pipe, your tank, or the main shutoff valve of your home. If it is an electric water heater flip the circuit breaker to cut off any electricity.

If you're still not getting anything it will likely need the help of a professional of air conditioning repair in Salt Lake City. If the fan is working though and it's simply not cooling, then there's probably difficulty in the condenser (outdoor unit)/air handler (indoor).

Mold growth in the home is a serious and potentially damaging occurrence, but this too can be prevented or remedied by the homeowner themselves if they are aware of the situation. A homeowner can help protect their home by making sure that their home is properly ventilated.

Having a properly ventilated home will help to cut down on the conditions that promote mold growth. If mold growth has already been spotted in the home, a homeowner can take steps to eradicate the mold spores by washing the mold from the surfaces of their home using a bleach and water solution. Other summer time damages to a home that can affect a home in Utah is the infestation of pests. Summer time weather promotes the prevalence of pests and therefore the likelihood of an infestation in the home.

Connect your gas or electrical lines making sure that they are tight. Check for leaks with soapy water on the gas lines. Attach the exhaust flue for gas heaters. Finally release the valves to fill up your heater with cold water. Once the tank is full turn on your heater and set your thermostat between 105-135 degrees.
